July Update
Welcome to the homepage of NBT’s Learning and Access department.
We are now recruiting participants for this summer’s Gallery 37 Plus, a five-week (3 days a week) dance training programme for young people aged 16 to 24 who are not currently in education or employment. Working with professional dance artists Sharon Watson (ex-Phoenix Dancer and Rehearsal Director ) and NBT’s Dance Education Officer, Sophie Alder, participants will learn about dance technique and create their own dance piece for a performance at The Carriageworks on 4th September. As well as working towards their Bronze Arts Award, participants will find out what it’s really like to work in a creative environment, opening up routes to further training and employment. For more information and an application form, contact Jo Dean on 0113 274 5355 or email jo.dean@northernballettheatre.co.uk
Throughout July, we are working with Pyramid of Arts to deliver ‘Breathing Space’, a unique project exploring the benefits of dance and physical movement with a group of eight adults with profound and multiple disabilities at the Swarthmore Centre in Leeds. The project will provide an opportunity for the adults and their carers to enjoy physical activity, live music and increase their mobility and fitness during the ten creative dance sessions led by NBT Dance Education Officer, Caroline Burn, Alison Herbert, Arts Worker from Pyramid of Arts and accompanied by NBT musician Bill Laurence.
Julia Piggott, Creative Director at Pyramid of Arts said, “The collaboration with NBT is exciting because it engages participants who rarely have the opportunity to explore movement and dance. Working with movement and live music will give participants a chance to be creative and increase their motor skills in a safe environment. It also provides everyone, with and without a disability, an opportunity to communicate and socialise.”
